Antypody
A Quarterly Magazine of Australia, New Zealand and Oceania Research Association
The term “Antipodes” is a Greek Word referring to a place meaning “opposite the feet”. It is also used as a metaphor for a region located in the Southern Hemisphere of the Earth, opposite Europe, on the Pacific Ocean. The yearning to discover the Unknown Land of the South has been shaping the imagination of European philosophers and later travelers since ancient times. Although since those times Australia, New Zealand and the Oceania have been conquered by Western Civilization, this region is still a kind of Enigma and hides many mysteries which are waiting to be discovered. This region of the world is becoming more popular as a tourist destination, however in Europe people’s knowledge about the Antipodes, its nature, history and culture is still very poor.
A quarterly magazine “Antypody” is aimed at those who are not satisfied with insufficient information given in tourist brochures and await thorough, scientific insight. The periodical publishes articles on various scientific disciplines concerning the issues of Australia, New Zealand and the Oceania. It attempts to discover different, non postcard-like Antipodes, so unknown in Europe. Because the true is that this region is still Terra Australis Incognita for us.
